QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Extraction of Wisdom Teeth

1) Is it painful?

Nothing to worry about for the duration of the procedure, local anesthesia is very effective! Most people do not even know when the tooth is extracted, although it is possible to feel a little pressure. When the anesthesia wears off, there may be a mild to moderate sensitivity. Painkillers and antibiotics will help. You can rest and the next day everything will be better.

2) Should I miss work or school

Most people can continue their daily activities the next day despite swelling. You may need one to two days off if you work physically, have to talk a lot or if you work with the public and your appearance is important.

Post-Operative Advice (Continued)

To assure optimal healing, here's our advice following surgery or wisdom tooth extraction:

  • Bite firmly on cotton swabs and replace them every 30 minutes, until most of the bleeding stops.
  • If bleeding continues, bite on a wet tea bag for 30 minutes.
  • After the first 24 hours, rinse with salt water (1/2 teaspoon in a cup of water).
  • Take medications prescribed following surgery.
  • Put ice on the lower jaw for 20 minutes with 20 minute breaks, until bedtime.
  • Avoid smoking for 24 hours, since this increases the risk of infection.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Avoid eating hot and spicy food, rinsing, spitting or drinking through a straw for 24 hours.
  • Eat liquid foods with consistency during the 3 days following surgery.
  • Gently brush the areas where the wisdom teeth were removed 24 hours after extraction and start brushing normally all other teeth, and of course, floss!

Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Here is our post-operative advice to ensure optimal healing following root canal treatment:

  • Avoid chewing on the side treated until the effects of the anesthesia wear off.
  • There may be some discomfort during the 3 days following the operation. In this case, you can take anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil or Motrin.
  • If you are prescribed an antibiotic, take it until the end.
  • To solidify the tooth, a crown cemented by the dentist is the ideal solution.
  • An x-ray will be taken during your preventive monitoring appointment with your hygienist.

After repairing one or more cavities, here are our tips:

  • Avoid eating until the anesthesia wears off.
  • Avoid eating on the side where the teeth were repaired. If this is not possible, avoid hard foods.

The benefits of this treatment for gums are proven, but you must follow some tips to maximize this dental care:

    • After 24 hours of treatment, clean the teeth with a soft brush, floss and interdental brushes, as demonstrated in the appointment. Maintain this good habit afterwards.
    • Preventive monitoring every 3 months or as recommended by your dental hygienist is essential to stabilize gum disease (periodontitis).
